Ok, this is NOT paid advertising. I'm not an HVAC professional, but it's a hobby (for example, I read ASHRAE manuals for fun). These units are remarkable. The U shape makes them less light restrictive than a tube sheet AC unit. And its efficiency is at least twice that of a floor model. One key to your peace of mind is that all the "noisy parts" are on the other side of the window. It's so obvious that it makes you wonder why it took anyone so long (which is often the case with really good ideas). It just works. I just bought a second one for my home office.

Initially I was skeptical about how quiet this unit would be and I was proven wrong. It's quiet and setup was easy, WiFi was just a push of a button after downloading the MS Home app.

So, in late June 2022, in the middle of a heat wave, my central AC decided to shut off (of course it did, why not? O_o). After spending two days at home with no air conditioning and an indoor temperature of 30 degrees, I had had enough. I chose this unit based on the great reviews and most efficient Energy Star rating and so far I am very impressed. So impressed that I bought a second two days later. One is installed in the front living room and the other in the master bedroom. These areas allow for the most airflow and, with a ceiling fan, ensure a comfortable climate throughout the house (both units are set at 23°C during the day and 21°C at night). This is mid-July 2022 and after 30 days I can honestly say that these devices are, without a doubt, extraordinary. I even checked my electric bill and saved $150.00 on my cooling bills! The units are not very heavy, maybe 60 pounds in the box. Easy to install and exceptionally quiet in operation. I clean the filters every two weeks as recommended (and since I really want to take good care of them, I thought I'd make an accessory cover filter for the compressor, condenser coil, condenser fan, and outdoor power electronics). remove dust and dirt from the outside of the device.

If you live like me, you know what you want to spend, so you see it. Yeah it's worth it, when I leave the site I open the app and boom! 💥 It's nice when I get to the door. Fully controllable via app and remote. And boy, is it quiet. My girlfriend is sitting near the air conditioner. and her headset (online games) would pick up the former. It's not this, you don't have to turn up the volume on your TV to hear it. amazing air conditioning

I picked up this 8,000 btu for our bedroom after our central air conditioner stopped working. I needed quiet AC operation so I bought an inverter style window unit. I did some reading and found that Midea had the best price available. Thoroughly impressed with how quiet and efficient this unit is. Watch a YouTube video for installation tips. Instructions and a video to help with the entire installation process. The product has a modern looking design with swinging slats and a nice remote control. The U-shaped design allows more light into the room. One person can easily install the 8000 (50lb lift). I find the temperature reading on the screen to be a few degrees higher than the actual room temperature. Just make up the difference and everything will be fine. Wonderfully quiet and powerful enough to easily cool an average-sized bedroom or living room. If you're looking for a window air conditioner, definitely take a look at the Midea range. They are slightly more expensive than traditional window shakers due to the inverter technology. When it comes to smooth operation and efficiency, the midea Inverter ac is just what you need for the heat of summer. I am very glad I made this purchase while contemplating repairs to my central air.

I have been a refrigeration technician for over 30 years and have installed and serviced almost every type of air conditioning/refrigeration system available at any time. Two years ago I picked up 2 of the 8,000 Btu's for my farmhouse which is just over 600 square feet and was built in the 50's and I'm pretty sure the walls aren't insulated or have some other function. Having owned various brands, sizes, and types of cooling systems throughout my life, this is hands down the best money I've ever spent on an air conditioner. I put one in the living room and one in the kitchen and the bedroom is in the middle. I was able to get the entire space down to 64' during about a high 90's during the day and a low 80's at night with high humidity over 3 days in a heat wave here in Boston, Ma. I usually put them at 70 to 72. The general rule of thumb is if your central air conditioner has your house 15-20 degrees lower than outside then it's working fine so if it's 98 feet outside and only 78' inside but you have it set to 72 ', it's actually working. well and doing the best he can given the situation. These Midea U window shakers are undoubtedly the best in terms of performance and noise. I can even hear my neighbor's window unit running as I sit there so quietly on my couch. They are only a penny which is the best part about them and if I had to I could hang beef in my place they have it so cold. They have already paid for themselves and I recommend them to anyone who asks me what system I would recommend or install in my own place. There must be a shooting star for products that stand out from the competition because these systems are out of this world in terms of value, performance, and quality! But don't take my word for it, find out for yourself that you'll be satisfied... From Rick, a licensed refrigeration engineer with over 30 years of experience. Thank you Midia!!

Just amazing that after installation when this unit is on I was able to hear the birds outside! The cooling is amazing and it's lovely that you can feel the breeze throughout the room. I bought two "Ultra Quiet Series" last year and returned them because the silence was uncomfortable. Enjoy a cool, calm and pleasant summer! Thank you so much!

My main comment about this AC unit is WOW! This replaced our previous LG which I think was around 7-10 years old. It was pretty loud. Installation on this one is pretty easy, but READ the instructions. It comes with a window sill bracket that has feet on the outside wall so you can adjust the level and doesn't require any additional support. It also comes with enough spacers and rubber grommets so you don't have to go to the hardware store. It has a function to open or close the window, but I did not use it, I do not want thieves to poke around. You need an outlet, 15A I guess. I saw a review that said it can't be used with a GFI, but we have it and you're perfectly happy with it, so I don't know what your problem was. What gives you the unique U shape? I already tell you, almost absolute silence while running. I had to go outside and listen to the compressor just to make sure it was running. This is one unit that won't affect your ability to sleep! In standard mode, the fan can run in a wide range of speeds. So when first turned on it runs at high speed then slows down as the room gets colder and it gets quiet amazing. If it gets too cold, it will even stop and wait a while before whispering again. Absolutely great!

FAQs
What size room will 8000 BTU AC cool? ›
8,000 BTUs will cover 200 sq. ft. (1,600 cubic feet) 10,000 BTUs will cover 300 sq.
Are U-shaped air conditioners quieter? ›The U-shaped design blocks the compressor noise outside, allowing ultra-quiet operation as low as 42dB.
How much does it cost to run an 8000 BTU air conditioner for a day? ›Energy Usage | Average Cost per Day |
---|---|
8,000 BTU | $0.68 |
10,000 BTU | $0.93 |
12,000 BTU | $1.14 |
15,000 BTU | $1.56 |
A mid-size 8,000 BTU AC should use fewer than 715 watts.
Is 8000 BTU too big for a bedroom? ›Recommended BTU By Room Size
If your room is 10'x 20' (200 square feet), you'd need to look at a 6,000 BTU unit. Once you get into 340 and 400 square feet per room, you'd need an 8,000 or 9,000 BTU air conditioner, respectively.
As a guide, consider 5,000-BTU models for rooms 150 square feet or smaller, 8,000 BTUs for medium-size rooms (340 square feet), and 12,000 to 14,000-BTU models for rooms with square footage from 550 to 800.
What is the advantage of U shaped air conditioner? ›They're certainly better than the flimsy accordion-paper many window units use to fill the gap between unit and frame. The end result is that a u-shaped design lets your home keep more of the conditioned air inside where you want it rather than leaking out through the gaps.
What is the benefit of U shaped air conditioner? ›It allows you to slide your window down into the unit—not all the way—but enough to greatly minimize the gap around the sides. There's less open space for your cool air to leak out (or hot air to seep in), and that also means better soundproofing than traditional window ACs.
Is it better to undersize or oversize an air conditioner? ›While an AC's capacity typically matches its energy usage, an undersized air conditioner will use more power simply because it is likely to run continuously, barely stopping for breath.
Is a 8000 BTU air conditioner 110 or 220? ›Portable air conditioners: 8,000 – 14,000 BTU running on 110-120V. Window air conditioners: 5,000 – 15,000 BTU running on 110-120V.
Does more BTU mean colder? ›
More is not better. A unit with too many BTU's, will cool the room fast, but leave the room humid. Too few BTU's will never cool the room down and the unit will run incessantly. To be sure you're making the right decision, call us to get answers about air conditioner sizes and efficiency.
How much does it cost to run a 8000 BTU air conditioner per hour? ›...
How Much Electricity Cost A Portable AC Use? ( Table 1)
Portable AC Unit (BTU) | Estimated Cost Per Hour |
---|---|
8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner | Costs $0.11 per hour |
It depends. If you're looking to cool your entire house, having multiple window air conditioners will use more energy than a single properly-sized central air conditioner would. Conversely, if you need to cool a single room, a window air conditioner will, of course, be the more efficient option.
Does higher BTU mean more electricity? ›One BTU is the amount of energy it takes to raise one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. The higher the BTUs, the more power the system has.
Do portable air conditioners use more electricity than window air conditioners? ›As mentioned in the previous section, window ACs use half as much energy as portable units. Based on government estimates (13 cents per kWh, 8 hours of use per day, and 3 months of use) and our testing, a portable AC will cost you about $42 more to run each season than a window AC.
How many BTU do I need to cool a 12x12 room? ›Obviously, the problem arises when you have a tiny 12×12 room, for example. According to the US Department of Energy directive, an air conditioner's most appropriate size would be 2,880 BTU unit.
What size air conditioner do I need for a 12x15 room? ›Measure Your Space
Using this example, a 12 x 15 foot room is 180 square feet; multiplied by 25 this yields 4,500 BTU of required cooling capacity. By following this rule, you get ample cooling on a rainy or hot, sunny day. But you can also determine size by considering an A/C needs 20 BTU per square foot.
Room Type | Room Size | Recommended BTU |
---|---|---|
13 x 13 room | 169 sq ft | 6,000 BTU |
14 x 16 room | 224 sq ft | 6,000 BTU |
16 x 13 room | 208 sq ft | 6,000 BTU |
20 x 20 room | 400 sq ft | 9,000 BTU |
Best ACs for Small Rooms
For a small bedroom, home office, or guest room, ranging from 100 to 250 square feet, look for an air conditioner with a capacity of 5,000 to 6,500 Btu. You'll want one with good scores for comfort and noise.
Generally, your temperature control system should have 20 BTU for every square foot of living space in the area you wish to heat or cool. For example, if your room or area is 400 square feet in size, then you should opt for a temperature control system with a capability of around 8,000 BTU.
Whats a good BTU for a living room? ›
Consumer Reports recommends 20 BTUs per square foot of the living space (or spaces) you want to cool down.
What is the most efficient form of air conditioning? ›Central air conditioning is the most efficient way to keep your whole house cool. You can expect lower energy bills alongside better indoor comfort, cooler temperatures and lower humidity.
Why are inverter air conditioners better? ›In inverter type air conditioners, temperature is adjusted by changing motor speed without turning the motor ON and OFF. Compared to non-inverter type air conditioners, air conditioners with inverters have less power loss and can save in energy.
What are the disadvantages of oversized air conditioner? ›Too Hot or Too Cold Air
An HVAC system with excess capacity can heat or cool your home faster, but that speed often results in a couple of other issues. First, your home won't benefit from gradual, even heating and cooling. As a result, you could end up with a number of hot or cold spots throughout your home.
An inverter air conditioner is a good investment. Yes, it is more expensive, but it is more durable, flexible, and functional. You want an AC that will last for several years. This air conditioner type can provide such an advantage to you in terms of energy consumption.
Is convertible AC really works? ›It is important to choose an AC that can handles rising temperature levels. Luckily, most convertible ACs can deliver powerful cooling even if the temperatures reach 54C. Convertible ACs can soon take over inverted ACs due to their versatility.
How do you drain a Midea U shaped air conditioner? ›You can drain the unit by putting a pan behind the unit and unscrewing the drain cap. Be careful, as the water will start pouring out immediately. Keep towels close by in case splashing occurs. To completely drain the unit, tip the unit back slightly to drain the last of the water.
How do you know if your AC is too big? ›If your AC is too big for your home, you'll notice at least one of the following 3 problems: Your air conditioner turns on and off right away. Your AC is not removing humidity. You have higher energy bills.
What happens if you put a small AC in a big room? ›If your air conditioning system is too small for the space that it is installed in, then it won't have an efficient enough output. This forces the system to operate far longer than it is designed to, to try to keep your home cool.
What is the rule of thumb for AC sizing? ›Air conditioning capacity is measured in British Thermal Units, or BTUs. A good rule of thumb to follow is that you'll need approximately 20 BTU for every square foot of floor area.
Can you plug an AC into a regular outlet? ›
Ostroskey reminded residents that air conditioners and other major appliances should be plugged directly into wall outlets, not extension cords or power strips.
Can you plug a window air conditioner into a regular outlet? ›Smaller units with a 115 volt and 15 amp requirement will be able to operate off a standard household outlet. However, larger units that have higher energy requirements need a committed outlet to handle the electrical current required for operation.
How many watts does it take to start a 8000 BTU air conditioner? ›Depending on the size of the space, an 8000 BTU air conditioner may use as little as 715 watts. 1250 watts is all that is needed for a 14000 BTU air conditioner.
Can you have too much BTU air conditioner? ›Generally speaking, a higher BTU is not better for your AC system. That's because higher BTUs will make the room more humid. It will also put more wear and tear on the unit, requiring more maintenance and shortening its lifespan.
Can BTU be too high? ›Too little BTU output and your room will not reach the required temperature and you'll suffer from your space being cold and uninviting, and nobody wants that. Too many BTUs and you could find yourself paying over the odds for heat that you don't need and being far too warm to function properly.
Is 8000 BTU good? ›8,000 BTU air conditioners are considered one of the smallest AC units. The 8,000 BTU (British Thermal Units) capacity might be enough for a good-sized room or even a small apartment. How big of a room will 8000 BTU cool? 8,000 BTU air conditioners can cool down rooms from 250 sq ft (about 16×16) to 400 sq ft (20×20).
How many square feet can a 8000 BTU AC cool? ›8,000 BTUs will cover 200 sq. ft. (1,600 cubic feet) 10,000 BTUs will cover 300 sq.
What is the cost difference between 68 and 70 degrees AC? ›These settings should provide a comfortable environment within the home. Each degree higher than 68°-70°F can increase heating costs by 1-3%, and each degree below 76°-78°F can increase cooling costs by 3-5% or more.
What uses the most electricity in a home? ›- Wet appliances. Washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers account for 14% of a typical energy bill, taking the top spot in our list. ...
- Cold appliances. ...
- Consumer electronics. ...
- Lighting. ...
- Cooking.
Obviously, the problem arises when you have a tiny 12×12 room, for example. According to the US Department of Energy directive, an air conditioner's most appropriate size would be 2,880 BTU unit.
How many BTU do I need to cool a 10x10 room? ›
Window air conditioners typically have a cooling capacity ranging from 5,000 to 12,500 British thermal units (Btu/hr.). As a general rule, an air conditioner needs 20 Btu for each square foot of living space.
Will 8000 BTU cool 400 sq ft? ›How big of a room will 8000 BTU cool? 8,000 BTU air conditioners can cool down rooms from 250 sq ft (about 16×16) to 400 sq ft (20×20).
How many BTU do I need for 250 sq ft? ›Area To Be Cooled (square feet) | Capacity Needed (BTUs per hour) |
